Preservation and Conservation Laboratory

The Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute Preservation and Conservation Laboratory, colloquially known as the Conservation Lab, is a relatively unique facility in any academic setting.

Our conservation lab is equipped with a Virtis freeze dryer, capable of accommodating human-sized specimens; a walk-in, dual-component environmentally controlled chamber; and a Specialty Coating Systems parylene deposition system.

Since its inception, the conservation lab has preserved material from around the world including human burials, forensic evidence, 5,000 year old burial shrouds, and modern Native American artwork.
