Geology Concentration Requirements

The Department offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in Geology with concentrations in Environmental Geology/ Hydrogeology or Geoarchaeology.

To be recommended for graduation, students must earn at least a 2.5 GPA in their major concentration. A student also must earn a grade of at least C in any Geology course that is taken to fulfill a degree requirement. One must earn at least a D in each required cognate.

Credit will be granted for courses listing lecture and laboratory separately only if the lecture and laboratory components are taken concurrently, unless special permission is granted by the Department. Permission to register for only one the components will ordinarily be granted when student previously has completed successfully one of the components.

Each student who has been accepted as a major is re-evaluated by the end of the sophomore year.

The curricula are designed with three primary objectives: (1) to prepare students for entry level employment with consulting and engineering companies that concentrate on environmental problems, (2) to prepare students for entry level employment in federal, state, and municipal environmental agencies, (3) to prepare students that enter graduate programs in the branch of geology of their choosing in preparation for university teaching or upper level employment with private companies or governmental agencies.

Full-tuition reimbursement and adequate living expenses have been readily available to each of our students who have pursued advanced study.
